Pipeline company CPMZ to expand Mozambique-Zimbabwe fuel route
Southern African pipeline operator CPMZ's project to boost capacity of its 294 km conduit between Mozambique and landlocked Zimbabwe by around two-thirds to cater for growing regional demand for diesel, petrol and jet fuel was officially launched on Wednesday.
The project will increase the annual capacity of the Beira-Harare pipeline connecting the port of Beira in Mozambique with the Feruka depot in Zimbabwe from three-million cubic metres to five-million cubic metres, company officials said.
The expansion, expected to be completed by the end of 2027, includes the construction of two pumping stations in the towns of Nhamatanda in central Mozambique and Messica, near the border with Zimbabwe, CPMZ said.
"This is the kind of infrastructure that strengthens regional connectivity, supports economic growth and creates greater resilience for the future," Mozambique's President Daniel Chapo said in a statement.
The project could be synchronised with a separate expansion of the Petrozim Line between Feruka, close to the border with Mozambique, and Zimbabwe's capital, Harare.
CPMZ, a Mozambican company that operates the pipeline, said the five-million cubic metres annual target is part of its goal to reach approximately 12-million cubic metres a year through a larger diameter pipeline that would enable capacity to stay ahead of rising fuel demand.
According to a March newsletter, CPMZ transported close to 2.7-million cubic metres of refined products between January and December in 2025, a 16% year-on-year increase from 2024, and record throughput.
